I found the perfect juror for the Karen Read trial!

Would the younger generation be more likely to favor Karen or the Commonwealth?

I couldn’t believe it! I was sitting with a neighbor and a young couple from Boston and the conversation soon turned to Karen Read’s upcoming second murder trial in Dedham.

The young lady had just finished watching the latest documentary on cable (six million viewers so far!). But the young man had absolutely no knowledge of the case – none!

He couldn’t even tell you what town John O’Keefe was killed in. The 25-year-old college educated man was clean, articulate and employed. Yet he was completely detached from the news story that has captured the attention of all New England and much of the world.

He had no opinion on who, what, when, where or why – the questions young reporters used to be taught to answer in their stories?

He knew nothing. And here is the reason why. Generation Z gets its news from social media. But what is usually delivered to them via their personal feed is a direct reflection of what they already have expressed interest in. So in the case of this young man, it would be sports.

In the last two to three years, Fox News viewership declined by 20%, with a 38% drop among adults 25-54. CNN for the same demographic was down 27%.  The biggest decline was far-left MSNBC with a decline of 42%.

Network news has held up better, perhaps because their audiences were hollowed out decades earlier. But ABC’s “World News Tonight” and “CBS Evening News” both had 12% declines in what’s called “the money demo.”

I’ve been surprised at how quickly they’ve been able to pull together a jury in Dedham. But maybe there are more people detached from the daily news than we would expect.

Would the younger generation be more likely to favor Karen or the Commonwealth? Generation Z doesn’t tend to trust the government – think COVID, the Biden catastrophe, all the fake news against Trump, etc.

So maybe a younger jury would be better for Karen.
