What’s So Bad About Over-the-Counter Abortion

Gov. Gavin Newsom demands abortion in California be on demand, without apology, and now, over-the-counter.

If a pharmacy refuses to offer the latest abortion innovation, it won’t survive long under Newsom’s regime. If it dares to seek proper FDA approval, it’ll see hard times from Governor Hair Gel.

Newsom took to Twitter on Monday to threaten to end any state contracts with Walgreens:

“California won’t be doing business with @walgreens — or any company that cowers to the extremists and puts women’s lives at risk. We’re done,” he said.

Newsom’s gripe is over Walgreens’ temporary refusal to distribute the drug mifepristone. While mifepristone is sometimes prescribed to patients with Cushing’s Syndrome or type 2 diabetes, it’s more often handed to women seeking to terminate an early pregnancy.

Don’t celebrate Walgreens just yet. Their concern isn’t over the baby or these so-called “extremists;” it’s over the bottom line.

Here’s what Walgreens said in a March 6 statement:

We want to be very clear about what our position has always been: Walgreens plans to dispense Mifepristone in any jurisdiction where it is legally permissible to do so. Once we are certified by the FDA, we will dispense this medication consistent with federal and state laws. Providing legally approved medications to patients is what pharmacies do, and is rooted in our commitment to the communities in which we operate.

As I said, the refusal is temporary. Walgreens is currently undergoing the FDA-mandated certification process to dispense mifepristone. I predict the company will be shelling out pills in the Golden State very soon.

Though mifepristone, sold under the brands Mifeprex and Misoprostol, has been available in the United States since 2000, it’s become a hot topic within the past year or so.

When Roe v. Wade was overturned in June, pro-life and abortion activists alike quickly pivoted to focus on mail-order abortions, predicted to be on the rise in red states with “heartbeat” or “viability” trigger laws. In January, the FDA ruled that mifepristone may be sold over-the-counter or by mail order.

Mifepristone, or RU-486, blocks progesterone, the “pregnancy” hormone that allows the uterus to line and accept the developing fetus. If the drug were featured in a TV commercial, you’d hear the monotonous female voice at the end droning, “Do not take mifepristone if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.” Why?

The ingested chemical starves and suffocates the baby in her early, helpless stage. If she’s old enough to have a heart, it will cease to beat.

It’s a Do-It-Yourself abortion.

For abortion providers, it’s gold. The on-site turnover rate will increase, allowing a clinic to perform more abortions—and rake in more cash.

Remember Bill Clinton’s campaign promise to make abortion “safe, legal, and rare?” Well, the FDA’s got “legal” covered. And with this new work-from-home pill, “rare” is pretty much out the window. But they never really meant “rare.” It just sounded good on the 1992 campaign trail. “On demand and without apology” has a better ring to it, especially if Planned Parenthood Action Fund oversees literature and signage.

Now we turn to “safe.” One brazen narrative pushed by the Left is that banning abortions will literally kill women.

You want to talk “safe?” Let’s talk “safe.”

Planned Parenthood refers to the procedure as a “self-managed” abortion.

“After taking abortion pills, it’s normal to have fever, chills, nausea, strong cramping and heavy bleeding for a day. In fact, the symptoms after taking abortion pills are the same as a miscarriage.” Hmm, I wonder why.

If any of these symptoms last for more than a day, Planned Parenthood (casually) suggests going to an emergency room.

Here’s what the site fails to mention:

The pregnant woman is not required to have an ultrasound—actually, she’s often discouraged from getting one, because 75% of women who view their ultrasound choose to carry the pregnancy to term.

Now, if the pregnancy is ectopic—where the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus—and the mother is unaware due to no ultrasound confirmation, the pregnancy will rupture. This results in the mother’s death. Period.

And a DIY abortion is just that—done by oneself. It’s readily available to any woman 18 or older. It can be performed anywhere: in a portapotty, in an airport ladies’ room, in a college communal bathroom. If the woman is alone and hemorrhaging, there is no one around to get her or her baby real treatment.

Thirdly, what is disposed of after the pill takes effect enters public water supply.

Can the pro-abortion regime honestly call this innovation “safe?” And if so, why hasn’t the drug—that’s been around for decades—always been available over-the-counter?

Gavin Newsom doesn’t care. He just wants pro-choice fodder for his presidential campaign someday.
