Why is Karen Read So Hot?

And I don’t mean in a good looking way.  Listeners, readers and social media followers cannot get enough.  I was on the phone with a colleague this week and she interrupted me to say, “I can talk, but hurry up.  Turtle Boy is going to be on with Howie in 3 minutes”.  Of course I laughed out loud, but the fixation on this story has not died down.  One of my employees texted me at 7:43 aka midnight asking Howie’s latest take on the story.  No story has captured and boosted ratings on our radio network like the Karen Read trial.

We never saw ratings like we saw last year with the Karen Read trial.  The last time there was ever this much interest in a non-political story was during the Louise Woodward case.  Now you can probably figure out how old I am.  What’s so interesting about this story is that it attracts both young, old, male and female.  It is not a specific demographic.

Traditionally in talk radio, we cannot wait for the Presidential election.  It is a sure win for our base, but not even President Trump could compete with Karen Read.  We had dinner with Karoline Leavitt to celebrate her appointment, but most of the conversation surrounded our opinions about the Karen Read trial. Who do you think really did it, how did it happen, are the Feds going to step in? 

And so we go back to the title of this column.  Why is Karen Read so hot?  For women, I can tell you it has to do with the fact that they feel Karen has been so unjustly accused.  We all feel in some way, it could have been me.  Well, maybe not today. Personally, I like to hit the pillow no later than 8:00 p.m.  But the thought of being set up terrifies all women.  The fact that she is a far from perfect character makes her all the more interesting and realistic.  Because, none of us our perfect.  And none of us deserve to spend life in prison for a crime we didn’t commit.

There have been a few hearings already and ratings and chatter has begun.  When looking at our downloads, I see the huge jumps.  The X account grabs more followers and website brings more listeners.  A former local politician recently posted, “I REALLY have not followed this at all”.  Well, you would truly be the exception, because the ratings are in and they are Hot!
