Spirit in the Sky: The Death of an Airline – 5.4.26
Spirit Airlines, we hardly knew ye!
Senator Elizabeth Warren must be proud of herself. After killing the merger between JetBlue and Spirit Airlines– the budget airline carrier has finally gone under.
The Hill’s Robby Soave writes:
In 2022, Spirit Airlines knew it couldn’t survive unless it merged with another airline, and accepted a multibillion-dollar deal from JetBlue to acquire the company. That deal would have saved Spirit.
But Biden’s antitrust division said no, can’t have that — it would lead to monopolization in the industry, which of course was a ridiculous complaint, since Spirit was going underwater if it couldn’t merge. But the DOJ sued the company, and a judge sided with the federal government, blocking that merger.
At the time, progressive Sen. Elizabeth Warren celebrated the ruling. “I’ve warned for months that a @JetBlue- @SpiritAirlines merger would have led to fewer flights and higher fares. @JusticeATR and @USDOT were right to stand up for consumers and fight against runaway airline consolidation. This is a Biden win for flyers!”
But she isn’t taking a victory lap.
Luckily for us, X’s Community Notes wasn’t letting Warren get away with her attempt to play the blame game.
Members of the Trump administration were not on board with the Senator–or former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg— rewriting history.
Babylon Bee has been making hay while the sun shines. Their headlines on the matter have been 10/10.
Speaking of brawls…
