Governor Healey Grins Beside Anti-Catholic Drag Group
If hatred and sacrilegious imagery are the tools that our Governor celebrates to foster inclusion, it is indeed a sad day for the Commonwealth.
“In Massachusetts, we come together. We lift people up. And we lead. No matter what challenges we face, no matter what lies ahead, we will stay true to the best of ourselves.”
That’s what Governor Healey proclaimed in her inaugural address to the Commonwealth. Massachusetts Republicans agree!
Our state has a rich tradition of building people up, providing opportunity, and promoting a less-poisonous public discourse than what we see in Washington, DC. What’s troubling is that Governor Healey’s words recently were not backed by her actions. Just a few weeks ago, our Governor saw it fit to pose with members of the so-called Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
This group is a hateful, anti-Catholic group that uses offensive regalia and rhetoric to malign people of faith. If hatred and sacrilegious imagery are the tools that our Governor celebrates to foster inclusion, it is indeed a sad day for the Commonwealth.
In choosing to pose for selfies with a group that is so far outside the mainstream, Governor Healey has chosen to use the hurtful rhetoric that she decries. Associating with such a group detracts from the Governor’s message of respect and inclusion.
Massachusetts Republicans call on Governor Healey to disassociate herself from this group and its hateful message.
The Commonwealth cannot afford the use of hate as a means of justice. Unfortunately, the images of Governor Healey lifting up the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is a reflection of one-party rule gone awry. Our public discourse can, and must, be elevated by two strong, impactful teams on the political field. As chairman of the Massachusetts Republican party, this is my goal. Through our success, we can drive hateful fringe groups to the sidelines of Massachusetts politics.
