Mills' campaign denies Schneiderman's presence helped raise Empire State cash

Maine Attorney General Janet Mills, a Democratic candidate for governor, misled reporters Wednesday when she claimed that disgraced former New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman never aided her campaign’s fundraising efforts.
Following Schneiderman’s abrupt resignation Tuesday night, Mills issued a statement that Schneiderman spoke briefly at a campaign event for progressive activists and donors but he “never contributed to the Mills campaign or collected any contributions on its behalf.”
Media coverage of the statement –e.g. Mills: Disgraced New York AG did not aid campaign — left readers with the impression that Schneiderman did not help his fellow Democrat AG raise any campaign cash whatsoever.
But Mills did not acknowledge that on December 5, Schneiderman headlined a fundraising event for her where attendees paid a minimum of $50 for a ticket, with host level contributions running up to $1,600.
Schneiderman, once a progressive champion, resigned in disgrace earlier this week following an explosive report in The New Yorker which detailed a pattern of violence against women with whom he was romantically involved, including throttling and other forms of sexual violence, and racist slurs.
Mills’ campaign manager Michael Ambler said the campaign had no plans to return donations Schneiderman helped them raise by headlining the event, insisting that NYC donors came to see the Maine Attorney General and not Schneiderman.
“Mills was the draw,” said Ambler.
