President Trump is delivering on the promise that prompted many of us to vote for him in 2024: close the borders and stop the bleeding. Millions of illegal aliens, many of them horrific criminals, were allowed into the country with little to no vetting by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Trump made that a focus of his first days in office again by shutting down the borders and ramping up enforcement.
I’m reminded of the continued hemorrhaging of freebies to illegals still in the United States every time I pay my monthly health insurance premium. More salt gets poured on the wound should I take a trip to the emergency room for myself or a family member. The wait is long, surrounding conversations are primarily in Spanish, and I have a steep co-pay when others are treated courtesy of the taxpayers.
But Trump continues to remove the cancer of illegal immigration by deporting the worst of the worst and anyone who’s found with them without proper authorization to remain in this great nation of ours. I pray those efforts continue and become more efficient with each passing day.
There are many things I could do without, chief of them being this seemingly never-ending war with Iran and all that has come with it. Whether Iran was close to nuclear weaponization, the history books will tell. But through this I can only have faith that our President knows that a peaceful resolution is to be found.
What I can really do without are the harebrained ideas that must pop into President Trump’s mind in the wee small hours of the morning. Sharing images of himself as Jesus healing the sick on Truth Social. Posting AI videos of him dumping feces onto Trump-deranged liberals from a fighter jet. And most recently, cooking up the idea of renaming Lake Ontario to Lake of America.
I’ll be honest, the first incarnation of this idea, when he renamed the Gulf of Mexico, was phenomenal. It made some sense. Foolish and needless? Yes. But it resonated. It carried the spirit of “Hell yeah, ‘Merica!”
However, this latest notion to bestow a new name onto one of the Great Lakes is a road better not traveled. I understand this is part of Trump’s trademark blowhard negotiation tactic, but it reads like a bad sequel to what should have been a standalone classic movie. Now the follow-up seems like it’s trying to capitalize on the original by stealing the same material and slapping it onto a new package.
It’s hack.
But more importantly, these public urges that Trump falls prey to have a damaging two-fold effect. The first is that it enrages the liberals, many of whom are happy to not follow the day-to-day headlines. But once an absurdity like the Lake Ontario fiasco starts making the rounds on social media, they’re on it like white on rice. They become incensed. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve seen on my own feeds sharing the news and the endless comments mocking Trump and those who support him.
The libs also become more emboldened when Trump’s silly tactics are on display. They feed fuel to the fire that we have an “idiot in the Oval Office” who can’t be taken seriously and must be stopped at any and all costs.
In other words, they’re more likely to go out and vote during the upcoming midterms than to stay on their couches for the day.
The second effect is similar to the first, only it casts the same spell onto the other side of the aisle. Those who voted for Trump to buckle down and fix our nation’s most immediate problems, to stop the bleeding, feel that he’s not taking his duties as President all that seriously. These fair-weather supporters get cold feet, and suddenly become apologetic to their remaining anti-Trump friends and acquaintances. That, too, can show up in the midterms in the negative column for Trump-endorsed or aligned candidates.
Again, I get it. This is part of Trump’s modus operandi: enrage the opposition into submission.
We’ll see if it works.
I just wish he would refrain during such a crucial election cycle.
