Massachusetts State Police linked to alleged sexual assault on Martha’s Vineyard

The State Police are reporting an alleged sexual assault at a barracks on Martha’s Vineyard as the summer closes, but not bad news for the agency.

The State Police confirmed late Wednesday that they are “cooperating” in an investigation into the reported sexual assault between two people not working for the agency.

“At the end of August, the Massachusetts State Police became aware of a reported sexual assault involving two people not affiliated with the Department. We are fully cooperating with the local police’s investigation into the matter and remain committed to pursuing justice in every sexual assault case. To protect the integrity of the investigation, we will have no further comment at this time,” a State Police Spokesperson told the Herald in an email.

The alleged sexual attack reportedly occurred at a barracks on the island, the Herald was told. That’s where a woman alleged she was assaulted by someone who was visiting a trooper assigned to the Island for the summer.

The MSP has opened an internal affairs investigation, which will follow the results of the criminal process. More information was not available due to the nature of the alleged crime.

Also today in Quincy District Court, suspended Trooper Christopher Regan, caught on camera appearing to pummel a fellow Statie at a Quincy bar, will be arraigned on a single assault and battery charge.

Regan is accused of assaulting a fellow trooper at the ReelHouse brewpub in Marina Bay on June 26 in a one-sided fight that was shown in a video taken off the bar’s security camera. That clip immediately went viral.

The off-duty officers, who had been assigned to the Suffolk DA’s office in the elite SPDU detective unit, have both been dropped from that squad. Both MSP troopers, after the incident, were reassigned to the Division of Field Services, which is responsible for the state’s roadways.

Regan has since been suspended with pay. Last year he made more than $200,000, according to state payroll records. The most he made in a year was $277,000 in 2023 — including $81,000 in overtime that year.
