Recently we’ve been reminded that the deer aren’t “wearing Kevlar vests” so nobody needs an AR15 that can “fire 30,40, 50 or 100 rounds!”
Well at least he’s consistent.
Grandpa Joe Biden has been telling us this for decades now since he authored the so-called “assault weapons ban” of ’94 and implores us instead in a video for parenting magazine to “buy a shotgun”. Fortunately for most of the country, the AWB of 1994 went away after 10 long years of arbitrary restrictions and a failure to reduce violent crime. Of course, Massachusetts made it permanent in 1998. MA has never seen a gun control bill it didn’t like, hence some of the most stringent laws in the country. More on that later…
I wonder how the debate amongst the founders went before the Bill of Rights was ratified on December 15, 1791? Maybe it was Hamilton, Franklin or Washington who proposed it first; “Guys…gather around. I know we just sent the tyrants back across the sea where they belong, but what has been keeping me up at night is this: I want to make sure we can go deer hunting for all future generations!”
“I know when those Redcoats came to get our guns, we fired the shot heard around the world, but I think we should ban all private ownership of cannons, and ensure hunting until veganism comes into vogue.”
I know this is how POTUS thinks it went down, but I think he was still a little young to remember it that clearly.
As we mark our country’s 245th lap around the sun, I would like to point out the problems with this logic by asking a few questions.
- How would we have fared if the Patriots didn’t own the 1776 “assault muskets?”
- Did/does the Second Amendment ensure the right to keep and bear arms for the government or the people?
- What does “Shall not be infringed” mean?
While you ponder these and a few more questions of your own, I ask, why are government officials so afraid of an armed citizenry? After all, it would take some nukes and F-15’s to take down the tyrants now, so what is the big deal (make the argument for buying a gun while telling me I don’t need one)?
Have the many gun control laws that were passed since, significantly reduced violent crime? How is it working in Chicago, Detroit, Washington, D.C., NYC, etc.? We only need to look in our own backyard to see Massachusetts has the highest violent crime rate in New England, despite the pols telling us how safe we are, thanks to the most invasive and restrictive gun laws in the country.
I, for one, will be celebrating freedom from tyranny in one of the oldest American traditions: Shooting America’s rifle: The modern musket! Happy Fourth of July! Let Freedom Ring!
