There is plenty of upside in being underestimated. Look no further than the 2016 election of Donald J. Trump. The Democrats rejoiced when Trump was selected as the Republican nominee. They would crush him in historic fashion, they thought. Time soon proved that Hillary’s epic victory over Trump was not to be. And since November 9th, 2016, Trump Derangement Syndrome has spiraled out of control.
With each subsequent meltdown, Twitter tirade, and rant–has become increasingly obvious: the glaring disdain the Left has for the reality-star-turned-politician is less about the man himself. Rather, it is about the millions of Americans who support him.
For a long time, the Left managed to criticize Republican voters somewhat indirectly. They would focus on the public leaders they claimed were “dumb” representatives of the collectively obtuse party. From Ronald Reagan to George W. Bush and later Sarah Palin, the intelligence of the GOP’s politicians became fodder for the progressives. Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show, and other woke programs made the most out of the caricatures. NY Magazine published a piece in their “Intelligencer” section in 2018 titled, Why Conservatives Love Dumb Presidents.
But the mainstream media and the Democrat party usually managed to draw a line at the voters. Not because of any moral compunctions, but because they didn’t want to risk alienating half the country.
So what changed?
Well, remember– for the most part, the Democrats used to win.
It is much easier to bite your tongue when things are going your way.
But the facade started to crumble when then-candidate Trump began chipping away at disaster-nominee Hillary Clinton.
Which lead to the first slip-up.
Mrs. Clinton, unable to mask her contempt and frustration, said what she was thinking.
“…You could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic—you name it.”
It was the quote heard round the world.
While Hil had always felt that way about Republicans, she had never been ticked off enough to say it out loud.
Recently a clip from Don Lemon’s CNN show went viral. Normally this would be a dream for Lemon, whose program suffers from incredibly dismal ratings. But the video is just another example of the progressive elitism that will drive voters into Trump’s arms.
In the segment, Lemon’s guests, Rick Wilson and Wajahat Ali, arrogantly mock Trump supporters.
The entire back and forth is condescending, elitist and meanspirited.
But one thing it isn’t? Surprising.
Lest we forget that Don Lemon is the same guy who after Kanye West voiced support for Donald Trump said the rapper “is not very bright.” The host is just another example of a tolerant liberal.
CNN is the same network that pays Brian Stelter to describe what Fox News is reporting daily.
Stelter frets incessantly about the viewers who watch Fox News. See, according to Stelter, all you lemmings aren’t getting the “real” news. How will you know just how dumb you are if you don’t turn on Reliable Sources?
MSNBC is no better.
Joe Scarborough praised Adam Schiff’s opening arguments as a “virtuoso performance”. The Morning Joe host had far less positive things to say about Trump’s defense.
Joe described the likes of Alan Dershowitz and Ken Starr as a “confederacy of dunces.” Don’t let their brilliant legal minds and careers fool you. They are defending the Orange Man. They too must be stupid.
Mika’s husband is also the same pundit who said anyone who believed the FBI conspired against Donald Trump should “step away from your kitchen utensils and knives and blenders.”
In case his disdain for half the country was not clear enough, he continued to urge the morons to steer clear of anything sharp because “you will hurt yourself because you are too incompetent actually to use any basic household appliances.” Nice, right?
There was no self-reflection when the Democrats lost. Instead, like a bottle of cheap booze, the election encouraged the truth to seep out of the hammered malcontents.
Before Trump, the beautiful people in Hollywood would deliver calm albeit condescending speeches while accepting their awards. They’d congratulate themselves and scold us gently. This is how you should vote America. Now, the mask of cordiality has dropped. Robert DeNiro and Madonna will yell, curse and threaten if it means waking you up from your political stupor.
The President has not caused the progressive left to despise Republicans. The disdain has always been there, simmering quietly beneath the surface. All Donald Trump did was break them–and then the truth flowed out. Giggling Don Lemon and his funny friends have since backpedaled. But to quote Benjamin Franklin, “though many can forgive injuries, none ever forgave contempt.”
